HacKLN 2017(the Inter University Hackathon) is organized by the Department of Statistics and Computer Science, University of Kelaniya in collaboration with the Students’ Association of Statistics and Computer Science (henceforth known as the “organizers”).
The organizers have the right at their sole discretion to determine whether an entrant is eligible for the contest. The organizers may disqualify, at their sole discretion, the submissions (including, without limitation, content submitted in connection therewith), which (a) are in violation of third party rights or law or regulation, (b) use inappropriate or explicit language or images, or display content that HacKLN or Sponsors otherwise finds objectionable.
The rules and regulations in this document should be agreed upon by the participants of HacKLN. In any case of breach of any rule stated in this document, the organizers reserve the right to disqualify the participants from the HacKLN.
Rules and Regulations associated with HacKLN is as follows;
- The participants should register for HacKLN as a group, which should contain 3-5 members. A participant should be an undergraduate who is currently enrolled at a university/institute reading for a bachelors degree and holding a valid student identity. All the team members should be from the same university/institute.
- The University/Institute should be approved by the UGC. The list of UGC Approved Private Degree Programs can be referred from here, while the list of UGC Approved State Universities can be referred from here.
- Participant can be part of only one team.
- Participants should be above the age of 18.
- Participants are required to bring their own equipment needed for their submissions, organizers hold no responsibility of supplying equipment. Organizers reserve the right to deny access to participants who may carry in equipment which maybe dangerous to the other participants or the premises.
- Participants should behave accordingly at the premises of the HacKLN and should not consume any alcohol or drugs.
- Participants are not allowed to submit a project to the HacKLN, which have previously won at another “hackathon”.
- The participants are not allowed to change the title of the project once submitted.
Intellectual Property and Copyright
- All the submissions to the hackathon remain the intellectual property of the individual or groups of individuals who developed them.
- By submitting an Entry or accepting any prize, you represent and warrant the following;
- You will not submit content that is copyrighted.
- Protected by trade secret or otherwise subject to third party intellectual property rights or other proprietary rights, including privacy and publicity rights, unless you are the owner of such rights or have permission from their rightful owner to post the content.
- The content submitted by you does not contain any malware, viruses, Trojan horses, worms or other disabling devices or harmful code.
- Group of participants represents and warrants that they are the sole author and copyright owners of the Submission, and that the Submission is an original work of the Participants, or if the Submission is a work based on an existing application, that the Participants has acquired sufficient rights to use and to authorize within the group; and that the Submission does not infringe upon any copyright or upon any other third party rights of which the Participant is aware.
- The judge panel, which consists of industry experts, academic experts and entrepreneurs will be selected by the organizers.
- HacKLN consists of 3 rounds,
- First Selection Round will be the selection of 20 groups for the Semi-Final round from the quality of the proposals that are submitted by the participants through www.hackln.lk.
- Semi-Final round will be the selection of 14 finalists from the 24 Semi-Finalists.
- Final round, a winner, 1st runner up and 2nd runner up will be selected from the 14 finalists.
- The decision of the judge panel is final.
- Each finalist(team) will be assigned with a mentor, the mentor cannot be changed after the selection from the Semi-Final round. A replacement mentor would be assigned by the organizers in any emergency situation a mentor is unable to assist the group.
- From the initial submissions, 24 shortlisted teams will be invited to pitch their submission to the judge panel. Based on their performance 14 finalists would be selected.
- The Semi-Final pitching would be of 3-5 minutes duration and 5-10 minutes Q&A by the Judges. The preliminary pitching should contain,
- A title slide with the group details and name of the submission.
- The technologies used for the model
- Go-to-Market plan, which contains the implementation plan and business model.
- The following guidelines are for the Final Round, the Implementation Stage of HacKLN 2017.
- The registrations would commence at 4:00PM and close at 5:30PM on the 6th of October, 2017 at the Department of Computer Science and Statistics, Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya. To determine the presentation order lots would be drawn at 4:00PM. The team leader should keep the lot number drawn at all times during the event.
- The participants are required to bring following for registration,
- their NIC
- valid student ID Card
3.The participants are required to bring the “Participant Tag” from the Semi-Final Round and wear it at all times during the event.
4.The dress code for the event would be smart casual.
Guidelines for the Final Round,
- The team would be working on the implementation stage of their projects with the designated mentors from the 10th of September till the 7th of October.
- The mentor would pick a feature of the project that is to be implemented at the final day of HacKLN and inform the Organizing Committee prior to the final Hackathon.
- The team has 12 hours to implement the designated feature and to prepare any other materials required for the presentation.
- 2 hours out of the 12 hours hackathon is allocated to work with the respective mentor on 6th of October after registrations.
Presentation Guidelines for Final Round are as follows,
- Presentations should be in English.
- Each team would get 5 minutes to present their idea. The 5 minute duration is to pitch their idea to the public, and to show a demonstration which was submitted to for the semi-final round. The teams are allowed to show their idea in any format they prefer.
- The presentation should contain the ideas submitted with the proposal. The proposal should show how the idea could be used to improve life at 3017, the implementation and the business model of it.
- The team would be allowed to connect their laptop to the main screen, however the available connectors are VGA for video and 3.5 millimeter for audio. Teams are required to bring any needed connectors.
- The presentation would be followed by a brief Q&A session (5 minutes or less) by the judges.
- The judges would allocate a mark for the ideas based on their presentation and demonstration as included in the judging criteria.
The timing for Final Round presentations are as follows;
- Timing begins the moment the presenter utters the first word or makes a gesture.
- Green colour would be shown and displayed from 3 min till 4 min.
- Yellow colour would be shown at 4 min till 4.30 min.
- Red colour from 4.30 min till the presentation is over.
- 1 mark per 10 seconds is deducted after exceeding the allocated time for the presentation.
The judging criteria for the Final Round,

- How the idea relates to the theme
- Business Model & sustainability
- Presentation and demo
- Working together with the team mentor
- The winner, 1st runner up and 2nd runner up of HacKLN 2017 would be selected.
The guidelines for Inventio,
- The projects of the finalists would be automatically considered for the IT Track of Inventio, the undergraduates Inventions contest. However, only the submissions from undergraduates who are from State or Private University/Institute approved by the UGC would be considered.
